Tasting Notes

Introduction:

I’ve always liked Wild Turkey, not loved however. I’ve also have always heard great things about Rare Breed and decided for $50 it was finally time to make the purchase, especially as I was seeing it more often on the shelves. A very dark whiskey, which is likely from the No 4 char barrel which also produces a variety of deep flavors. Unique indeed and one of my favorite Wild Turkey blends thus far.

Color:

Aesthetic Amber

Nose:

Sharp oak to start, with a tiny bit of dried, already chewed bubble gum. A longer and secondary sniff reveals corn and cooked vanilla. Definitely some sweet, berry fruit mixed in there as well with some orange zest. Honestly, it’s not super exciting.

Palate:

Whew! Starts hot, and continues for several seconds. Second sip is not nearly as strong, but still, even a little hot for me and overpowers the awesome flavors it offers. Sensing some really sweet vanilla flavored fudge however, with small hints of buttery oak wood.

A little bit of water lessens the heat and brings out some corn and the orangeness. I was surprised that it removed a little bit of sweetness as well.

Conclusion:

I like this whiskey for sure. There was just something about it that I couldn’t place that put it in a lower category for me. Wild Turkey 101 has been always a go-to for me on planes (obviously limited selections) and have always enjoyed it. I
