Tasting Notes

Introduction:

I’ve always just semi liked Old Forester. For the price I’ve always enjoyed it for my main backpacking whiskey. The nutty flavors just seem to go well whilst lounging in a hammock in the outdoors. It wasn’t until recent (several years ago) that I started giving them a serious look into their whole lineup, and what an impressive one they have. After a distillery tour for my bachelor party, I decided to start stocking them. 1910 I decided was my first review, as I’ve really been enjoying it lately. The second charred barrel they let it rest in provides a very strong, unique and full of flavor.

Color:

Off-Colored Outdated Oak

Nose:

Instantly smell the charrness. Strong oaky, caramel and vanilla flavors all hit simultaneously. It sure doesn’t smell like a 93 proof whiskey, one could easily guess over 100. The longer I sniff, I sense as if some dark red cherries were soaked in rubbing alcohol and then dehydrated. *new snack idea

After a few sips, the fragrance transitions a bit to a port wine.

Palate:

Warm, buttery oak glides down the tongue and continues to warm the inside. It’s not quite as hot as one may render from the nose. With the thought of cherries and alcohol in my mind, I can’t help but taste a hint of port. It’s almost as if they placed it in a secondary wine/port/sherry barrel for just a few days.

Conclusion:

I really enjoy this whiskey. One of my go-tos while eating dessert. Not necessarily because it’s a sweet whiskey, but just the dark, strong and wine flavor goes well with any sweet snack presented to me. I gave it a 6.5 as it doesn’t hit the strong bourbon flavors I typically enjoy. I also enjoy the uniqueness it provides on my shelf, especially considering many whiskeys have a hard time perfecting the wine barrel finish.
