Tasting Notes

Introduction:

I’ve been enjoying Angel’s Envy for a few years now, and with good reason. It’s always available at local liquor stores, price is reasonable and it sips so well. The subtleness of the port finish is just enough to make this mere 6-year-old whiskey taste like it’s double that in age. Unlike many port/sherry finished bourbons, this one is very subtle, so subtle I would almost still call it a bourbon.

Color:

Tawny gold

Nose:

Port really stands out. Comes off like cherry vanilla, with slight toasted port that smells like dried fig and raisins.

Palate:

Just a little hot at the very beginning, then it’s quick to cool off. Definitely ends sweet, and the port barrel stands out from a normal bourbon. Finishes with toasted and dry chocolate, with slight lingering madeira.

Conclusion:

Smooth indeed. I always try to have a bottle on my shelf for when I want to sip on something that’s not spicy, that’s juuust on the sweet side of whiskey, while still feeling like I’m sipping on a bourbon. I have yet to really try this with cocktails, maybe it’s not quite strong enough. And even though this has good flavor, and hits a variety of notes, it’s just not quite complex enough to reach above a 7. With extreme availability however, and the occasional sale, there’s no excuse to never have this on the shelf.
