Tasting Notes

Introduction:

I’ve been enjoying everything from Heaven Hill for so long now, I may be going into even the Small Batch biased. I love everything from the much-coveted Old Fitzgerald, to the award-winning Henry McKenna, to Larceny and Rittenhouse to even their cheaper stuff: Mellow Corn (which is surprisingly damn good for the price). But Elijah Craig seems to be the perfect mixer and sipper for the price that sits on my shelf for the availability and the price.

Color:

Auspicious Auburn

Nose:

Crème caramel is strong along with the oaky vanilla. I get a tad bit of buttery hay stuffed and baked in to a ripe apple as well.

Palate:

Sweet initially on the tongue with those crème vanilla flavors hitting you instantly. But then it’s followed by a tannic sharpness on the back and roof of your mouth. Definitely oily (in a good way) as it slides down your gullet, with a buttery custard taste with the breath out.

A few drops of water yields a less hot and spiced sip, yet more butter and caramel.

Conclusion:

Again, I really like Elijah Craig. And I think 5 is a good rating for this. Average in all my tastings thus far, although more heavily used for price. It has such a good flavor for any mixed or whiskey forward cocktail that doesn’t require high strength.
