Tasting Notes

Introduction:

Maker’s Mark to me has always been just that ok whiskey that’s always on shelf, stacked up next to the Jim’s and Jack’s. But I think there’s something particularly better about Maker’s. And with the popularity of cask strengths, among the public (unfortunately) and myself, this has been something I’ve wanted to buy for a few months. And I’m glad I did! It has all the things I enjoy of an ideal bourbon with the right price, along with a cool wax dipped top. What more can you want??

Color:

Rock-hard Mahogany

Nose:

First, it smells warm, yet inviting, and you know it’s going to be good, hot whiskey. You receive the typical Kentucky bourbon smells: vanilla, caramel, oak. The little bit of uniqueness you may receive is some honey and apple.

Palate:

The first sip confirms what the nose told us, warm vanilla caramel sweetness. The woodiness definitely pops with an allspice to peppery finish at the end. It doesn’t burn like my nose thought it was going to do, but the sweet flavor does drops off fairly quick, and the leaves a dry spiciness lingering in back of throat.

Conclusion:

I really enjoy this one. I’m surprised (like a lot my late purchases) that it took me so long to get this. It’s sweet, it’s strong. It’s a great sipper, and goes damn well in cocktails. And as I previously mentioned, it’s inexpensive and readily available. I put it at a 6 as it’s just not quite as good as Four Roses Single Barrel, Stellum as it’s not as complex. But the sweetnees and smoothness puts it way above just an average whiskey.

Try this if you like:

Four Roses Single Barrel, Stellum Bourbon, Angel’s Envy, Henry McKenna
