Tasting Notes

Introduction:

I really wanted to rate a local whiskey, and it just happens that this dram is my last pour of the first bottle I’ve ever bought from Mythology. I was there just after they first opened near Denver, when they only had clear spirits, and one whiskey: American Whiskey. Instantly I decided it was worth buying and adding to the shelf. A good Colorado whiskey, that doesn’t taste like a Colorado whiskey. After cruising their site, they may have changed their mash bill and age statement. My bottle says 2 years, but now online it seems they mix 4–5 year whiskeys together. There’s definitely something about their whisky I really enjoy. Mostly it’s the taste, but their logos are also so damn cool.

Color:

Coy Chestnuts

Nose:

Very inviting, and very light. Nothing super strong here, but smells like alcohol soaked hay, with a hint of light oak. A little spicy tell, and hardly any corn tells me it’s not corn heavy, and has a higher rye content.

Palate:

The peppery middle definitely confirms the high rye. Buttery chardonnay hits fairly quickly before the spicy finish. It’s definitely not a bourbon, as it’s not that sweet nor vanillay. Little wood flavor, tiny fruity/floral flavor.

Conclusion:

I’m not sure where they source their grains and water from, but I can indubitably say that it doesn’t quite taste like a Colorado whiskey, in a good way. I don’t know, yet, how to articulate that specific Colorado flavor, but there just seems to be something about it that turns me off (just a little) from a lot of CO distilleries. Mythology somehow does it right. Their Bourbon is also damn good too, and can’t wait for another distillery visit now that they’ve had time to add whiskeys to their lineup. I do the enjoy the high rye and peppery taste, but the flavor is a little light, and doesn’t quite provide the strong vanilla and toffee flavors I typically enjoy. I really enjoy the Mythology line up, but have a tough time spending $55+ on their bottles. On sale, I will definitely be adding another bottle to my collection.

Try this if you like:

Any high rye bourbons. Blanton’s. Boulder Spirits if you want to stay local.
