Tasting Notes

Introduction:

My first bottle of 1972 was a lucky find of the Bottle in Bond series several years back. I think I took it for granted and decided not to fill my shelves up with all 1972 products. Now they’re getting a little hard to find. But can still come across Single Barrel and the regular stuff for around $45. The more I dive into the brand and taste the variety of whiskeys’ 1972 has to offer, the more I really enjoy them. It’s frankly just a solid bourbon, similar to everything else I’ve been reviewing, and look forward to reviewing much more of what they have to offer in the weeks to come.

Color:

Mysterious Mahogany

Nose:

The hotness of the alcohol comes out fairly quickly on this one. But then a sweet butterscotch follows it, with a hint of maize and hay.

Palate:

A little hot to start, but definitely less than I expected with the smell. The corn indubitably stands out, along with other grainy flavors such as husk and hay on a dewy morning. I’m not discounting the standard bourbon sweetness however: a little cream soda mingling with some friendly butterscotch candies. Good and neat finish. Doesn’t linger long at all.

Conclusion:

Again, this is just a solid bourbon. I can’t place it in the same category as something like Four Roses SB or Stellum, for I believe it’s the high corn that makes it a little too grainy to push to a 7+. Reminds me of some Willet products, but I enjoy this more. I like having 1972 on the shelf. It’s a easy crowd pleaser, it looks cool (not as cool as Blanton’s bottle), and it’s very very smooth.

Willer Pot Still Reserve, Noah’s Mill and Rowan’s Creek for the high proof, Basil Hayden/Toast.
